The prestigious Award Ceremony of the In-House Professional Certificate of Data Science program for Intel Microelectronics (M) Sdn. Bhd. took place at the CS Auditorium, School of Computer Sciences, USM, on September 12, 2023.

This exclusive, in-house program commenced in April 2023 and concluded in August 2023. The program encompassed six Modules:

Module 1: Principle of Data Science

Module 2: Introduction to Machine Learning in Python

Module 3: Data Storytelling and Visualization by Tableau

Module 4: Text Analytics: Mining and Discovery

Module 5: Introduction to Big Data Technologies

Module 6: Introduction to Deep Learning in Python

This comprehensive curriculum provided participants with an end-to-end introduction to Data Sciences. Sessions were conducted once a week, every Saturday, over a period of 12 enlightening weeks.

# Recognizing Excellent: Honouring the Best and the Brightest

TEXAS Series 1 has been held on 13th June 2023, 3pm, in USM CS Auditorium. It is a great honor to have Mr. Yeoh Shih Hoong, the Senior Vice President of Vitrox Technologies Sdn. Bhd. as the speaker for the session. Mr. Yeoh is a USM CS Alumni, majoring in Software Engineering, currently leading the RnD department for some tools and technologies in his company.

TEXES is a forum-based event, not only a one-way speech by the speaker. Audiences can post their questions on the Platform to be answered by the speaker. The main objective of this Series is to provide a great opportunity for current students to learn more about the different career paths available to them in the tech industry, and to get advice from our alumni who are now experienced professionals.

Overall, it was a fruitful session, and the audience benefited a lot from the session.

The very first Dean’s List Awards Ceremony has been held on 1 Jun 2023, in the DKG31, School of Computer Science, after a long hiatus to celebrate and recognize the tireless efforts and outstanding academic achievements of all the awardees.

There are a total of 229 recipients who have been receiving the Dean's List Award from the Dean of the School of Computer Sciences, Professor Dato' Dr. Bahari Belaton. There are also extra tokens being awarded to the Top 10 performers each year (Year 1- Year 4).

Special thanks to Dr. Tan Ren Zhang, the Alumni of CS USM, for sponsoring McDonald Meal to the awardees. Dr. Tan Ren Zhang graduated from the School of Computer Sciences, with a Master of Science (Data Science and Analytics), and also a Doctor of Philosophy (under the supervision of TS. Dr. Chew XinYing).

CodeMaven 2.0 Girls2Code, jointly organized by the School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (CS USM) and Telebort, follows a LAUNCH, CODE and JAM model to encourage young girls (7 - 12 years old) to learn coding and become technology creators. Our CodeMaven community program structure starts with a virtual launch (LAUNCH), followed by a series of coding workshops (CODE), and ends with a coding challenge (JAM). Currently in our third installment after the initiation of the program in 2019, CodeMaven 2.0 was held in conjunction with the International Girls in ICT Day 2023. CodeMaven 2.0 focused on the theme of creative computing (i.e., creating interactive and dynamic computing media) using Scratch. The activities were designed to encourage students to learn basic coding concepts through the creation of animated stories.

The events in CodeMaven 2.0 encompassed:

• Code Jam (F2F coding challenge): 6 May 2023

We had a total of 142 girls (aged between 7 - 12 years old) registered for the program and 130 girls joined us on the Virtual Launch Day through the zoom online platform. To make female ICT role models more visible to girls, we invited speakers, Ida Mok (co-founder and president of Women in Blockchain Asia) and Sophie Azlan (award-winning game developer), to share their inspiring ICT career stories during our virtual launch. In addition, CodeMaven 2.0 also involved 14 CodeSysters, female university student volunteers, who played the role as mentors in coaching the girls

In our final F2F Code Jam, a total of 18 girls gathered at Makerspace@USM to put their coding skills to the ultimate test and compete in an animation coding hackathon. The top five most creative animations were selected as winners by a panel of judges from Intel STEM team (Mr. Ong Soon Ee and Miss Teo Sje Yin) and USM (Dr. Wong Li Pei, Dr. Nasuha Lee Abdullah, Dr. Syaheerah Lebai Lufti and Dr. Rosni Abdullah). Prizes for the winners were sponsored by Telebort and CS USM. All thanks to the unwavering support of our sponsors, partners, parents and the community, CodeMaven 2.0 is a step closer towards cultivating interest and creating greater exposure among young girls in coding and STEM.
