Jasy Liew Suet Yan, a 2016 graduate of the Syracuse iSchool’s Ph.D. program is now a senior lecturer at the School of Computer Sciences, at the University of Science in Malaysia. Her dissertation research was also recognized with the Syracuse iSchool’s 2016 Doctoral Prize at Convocation. Her dissertation was titled “Fine-Grained Emotion Detection in Microblog Text.”

“I am honored to have my dissertation, written in blood, sweat and tears, recognized as making a significant contribution to the field of information science,” says Liew Suet Yan. “Given how diverse the research is in the competition, this award is especially gratifying and meaningful to me as it shows that the research community acknowledges the significance of the effort to better understand the richness of emotions expressed in text in order to help computer systems become more sensitive and accurate in recognizing human emotions. The field of information science is indeed a supportive breeding ground for research combining qualitative and computational methods to further our knowledge on emotion expressed in text.”

Pertandingan anjuran StartupMalaysia.org dengan kerjasama IEEE SB USM itu adalah inisiatif Kementerian Sains & Teknologi (MOSTI) di bawah MOSTI Inovasi Sosial (MSI), bertujuan menggalakkan pelajar-pelajar universiti tempatan menerokai dunia teknologi, inovasi dan kreativiti dalam cara yang menyeronokkan dan berdaya saing.

27 March 2017 - USM has been appointed as regional hub covering (i.e. penang, Kedah, Perlis and north of Perak) to serve as a professional learning community platform for educator communities involving teachers, school leaders and lecturers. One of the main delivery under regional hub umbrella is the "Teacher Certificate Program: Computational Thinking and Computer Science - Teaching Certificate". This course focus on problem solving that utilizes participants prior's knowledge in their subject area along with computational thinking skills and pedagogy in order to help them understand the nature and scope of problem. 

PENANG, 23 January 2014 - Four final year students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Computer Sciences have won the first prize in the 2014 Hilti IT Innovation Competition held in Switzerland last week.

The winning team comprised of Soh Sin Siang, Oh Ying San, Wong Wan Ping and Jonathan Ng Zhen Yuan submitted their idea presentation on “Emotion intelligence. Communication. Link-up the employees” (Ec-Link), beating 10 other teams from Switzerland, Netherlands, Korea, Austria, Liechtenstein, USA, Germany, Indonesia and Malaysia. Ec-Link is an innovative idea that enables one’s emotion to be identified during teleconferencing.

For example, in a teleconferencing meeting, the presenter/speaker can identify whether a particular person in the meeting is paying attention or not, or whether they are happy or sad during the course of the meeting even though they are at different locations.

With the theme ‘Communication and Collaboration. Anytime. Anywhere.’, this competition is held to gather the best ideas on how to create better communication and collaboration between Hilti and its customers as well as among Hilti employees, compile information for easy access/retrieval, prepare instruction manual, and create a team of highly creative individuals with high productivity that works well together.

Hilti is a company providing cutting-edge technology to the global construction industry. Hilti employees are in direct contact with customers on construction sites and provide solutions for complex construction-related problems.

This competition is opened to university students of all levels worldwide including the undergraduates, Masters, and Ph.D students.

GEORGE TOWN: A university researcher has developed a computer tool that can help prevent cybercrimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Dr Aman Jantan, a senior lecturer at the School of Computer Sciences of Universiti Sains Malaysia, has developed the cybercrime investigation tool called the Forensic Analysis and Discovery System (FADS).

Dr Aman said the system could ease digital network forensic investigations while reducing the amount of space needed to store relevant records.
