Care for Second Language (C4SL)

Better English now a click away for students. AN online community project initiated by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has taken away the pain and hassle of learning English for 60 students. The students from five schools in Penang are now using the portal to brush up on their English in a fun and semi-formal way.

Better English now a click away for students

USM School of Computer Sciences lecturer Dr Shahida Sulaiman said the Care for Second Language (C4SL) programme was aimed at making English easier and more fun to learn.

She said the C4SL was an online forum under the university’s Kliquey portal.

It acts as a platform that allows sharing of data and knowledge in an electronic community (e-community).

The programme was launched at SMK Abdullah Munshi recently.

Dr Shahida said that apart from the forum, C4SL also provided other resources for the students to improve their English.

“Students are encouraged to read the materials and write their comments which will give them more confidence in English,” she said.

“The administrators monitor the students online to ensure that they use correct English in the forum,” she added.

State Education Department deputy director Dr Sharifah Bee Aboo Bakar, who launched the programme, said that the younger generation was adept at using Information and Communication Technology and this could be used to improve students’ knowledge.

The students selected for the programme are in Form One.

They are from SMK Abdullah Munshi, SMK Bukit Gambier, SMK Datuk Haji Mohd Nor Ahmad, SMK Hamid Khan and SMK Sg Ara.

Schools that wish to sign up for C4SL can e-mail the list of selected students to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
